This weekend I took a little time off to reconnect with my German roots and visit Chicago’s Christkindl Market with a friend.
I have fond memories of going to the Christmas markets in Germany and haven’t been to one since moving to the States 20 years ago. So, in a sense, I was due to go. I enjoyed wandering through the crowd, hearing Christmas music, seeing the delicate wares of vendors from Germany and all over the world and smelling the delicious German food. It was rather cold so drinking Glühwein, a warm red wine flavored with cinnamon, cloves and lemon, was the perfect way to keep warm.
I must admit, though, that when I first stepped onto the marketplace, I was a little overwhelmed with flashbacks of childhood memories of all the sights, sounds, smells and tastes. If you have time to go, I can highly recommend it!
The market is free to the public and open every day until Christmas Eve.
