I recently photographed a Navjote ceremony for Jace and Simone, two young children of Persian background who live in Louisville, Ky.

While I didn’t understand much about the ceremony, I was intrigued by the elaborate ritual that involved prayer, a small fire burning in the center of the room and colorful garments. The ceremony itself took about 90 minutes and the celebration finished with a buffet of ethnic food, yummm!!!

Following the ceremony, the child is viewed as a member of the Zoroastrian community.
